Kalon Studio is a modern furniture design studio based in L.A that stays environmentally conscious when choosing the materials they use to make their products. The coolest part is they send manufacturing to my home town of Gardner, Massachusetts. Many of the products are made of bamboo with precision CNC manufacturing. Kalon is the German-American husband and wife team of Johannes Pauwen and Michaele Simmering. Inspired by Berlin, the company follows a sustainable business model that includes local production, 100% post-consumer recycled paper and vegetable inks for printed materials and non-toxic finishes for their furniture. This piece, the Stump, is inspired by the original seat, the tree stump. The seat comes unfinished from an actual tree trunk so the wood splits as it ages and dries. It comes in FSC Certified domestic Ash or Maple (depending on availability), and is sanded to a smooth finish. For availability and stocklists check here.
